KAMPALA \u2014 The race for the next student president at Makerere University just got a serious dose of glamour.<\/span><\/p>

Former Miss Uganda 2023\/24 winner Hannah Karema has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the 92nd Guild Presidency, setting up what could become one of the most talked-about student elections in recent campus history.<\/span><\/p>

If she wins, Karema will replace the current guild leader Ssentamu James Churchill.<\/span><\/p>

And yes \u2014 social media is already buzzing.<\/span><\/p>

Karema, who shot to national fame after winning Miss Uganda, is now pivoting from crowns and catwalks to campus politics, pitching herself as a service-driven student leader focused on real issues affecting students.<\/span><\/p>

Her campaign slogan? \u201cService Above Self.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Karema said interactions with fellow female students convinced her that many are eager for a pro-student leadership style.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThis moment was so touching to me as I shared it with my fellow female students who told me how long they have been waiting for a Pro-Student Leader,\u201d she wrote.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cMy concept \u2018Service Above Self\u2019 means me and my team out doing ourselves for the amelioration and betterment of my fellow students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

But this campaign isn\u2019t just about inspirational slogans.<\/span><\/p>

Karema says she plans to push for fair tuition policies and better allowances for government-sponsored students, two issues that regularly spark heated debates on campus.<\/span><\/p>

Students say her entry into the race instantly changes the dynamics of the contest.<\/span><\/p>

For years, Makerere guild elections have been dominated by ideological student groups and political party-leaning camps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Karema\u2019s candidacy introduces something different \u2014 a high-profile candidate with massive social media reach and national recognition.<\/span><\/p>

And she\u2019s already showing she\u2019s not just about appearances.<\/span><\/p>

Karema has been leading environmental clean-up activities at Makerere, working alongside students to promote a healthier campus environment.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI joined my fellow students in cleaning and ensuring that Makerere University keeps a healthy environment free from contaminants, hazardous pollution and toxic substances,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>
