Erias Lukwago health condition dominated court proceedings on Tuesday, 07\/07\/2026, after the former Kampala Lord Mayor made an emotional appeal for specialised medical treatment, saying continued detention without adequate care amounts to condemning him to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lukwago addressed the court virtually from Luzira Prison, where he said his health had deteriorated and that he was unable to receive the treatment recommended by medical specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proceedings began with the state prosecutor informing court that Lukwago would appear through Zoom rather than attend physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session, however, did not proceed as expected. The trial magistrate was absent. A judicial officer who was present informed those in attendance that he did not have the authority to handle the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That development prompted an immediate objection from Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Sseggona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sseggona questioned why the proceedings could not continue and why no explanation had been given for his client’s virtual appearance instead of being brought before court in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He argued that Lukwago’s health made the situation particularly urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My client is critically ill. It is wrong for this matter to be adjourned without hearing him while he is in such a serious condition.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his address to court, Lukwago said specialists at Mulago National Referral Hospital had examined him for nearly a week before determining that he had five serious medical conditions requiring urgent treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The specialists have examined me and established that I have five serious medical conditions that require urgent treatment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Lukwago, one of those conditions affects his breathing, especially when he is in poorly ventilated spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also said a bone connecting his shoulder to his collarbone had broken again after previously being repaired through surgery in April 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lukwago told court that doctors had advised him to return to the hospital where that surgery was carried out. He further said he should already have travelled to India for specialised treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Doctors have advised that I return to the hospital where the surgery was performed. By now, I should have travelled to India for specialised treatment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lukwago also informed court that doctors diagnosed him with a serious ear condition requiring strong medication. He claimed that while in prison he was only receiving mild medication instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to his account, specialists also recommended that he use a special mattress and pillow to manage his condition. He alleged that prison authorities delayed approving those items after insisting on inspecting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further alleged that some of the medical equipment delivered to him was damaged during security checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lukwago added that doctors had also diagnosed him with a hernia requiring urgent surgery, persistent severe headaches and an irregular heartbeat that needed immediate medical attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He maintained that the recommended treatment could not adequately be provided while he remained incarcerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Keeping me in prison in my current condition is condemning me to death.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The emotional plea continued as Lukwago urged the court to intervene before his condition worsened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I pray that God saves me from dying in pain. But if I cannot receive the treatment I need, give me medicine that will allow me to die a painless death.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sseggona asked the court to direct prison authorities to ensure that Lukwago receives the treatment recommended by medical specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the lawyer, prison authorities had previously assured court that they were capable of providing adequate medical care. He argued that their subsequent actions had instead worsened his client’s condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The prison authorities should be directed to do only what they are capable of doing instead of taking actions that continue to worsen my client\u2019s condition.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The submissions placed the focus on Lukwago’s medical treatment rather than the substantive issues in the case. The proceedings nevertheless came to a halt because the trial magistrate was unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a result, no determination was made regarding the requests presented by the defence. For now, the matter remains pending before the trial magistrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
