The Radio and Weasel royalty dispute has taken a new turn after Goodlyfe Magic Limited, the company managing the duo\u2019s music catalogue, withdrew the group\u2019s works from the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) over concerns about royalty collections and payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a termination notice issued on July 7, 2026, Goodlyfe Magic Limited ended UPRS\u2019s mandate to license, collect royalties and administer music released under the Radio & Weasel brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company accused the collective management organisation of gross mismanagement, lack of transparency and suspected fraud in handling royalties linked to the catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goodlyfe Magic Limited said the decision followed concerns over the amount of money received from the exploitation of Radio & Weasel\u2019s works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company claimed it received Shs285,498 over an 18-month period despite the continued commercial use of the catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Radio & Weasel\u2019s music continues to receive airplay on radio and television stations and is also performed at concerts, entertainment venues and other commercial platforms, according to Goodlyfe Magic Limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company has demanded a detailed review of how royalties connected to the catalogue have been collected and distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goodlyfe Magic Limited gave UPRS 14 calendar days to provide a verified audit report showing all royalties collected on its behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company also requested a comprehensive statement of accounts and payment of any outstanding royalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, it asked for records related to the administration of the catalogue, including usage reports, licensing agreements, broadcast logs and cue sheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goodlyfe Magic Limited directed UPRS to immediately stop licensing, collecting royalties, representing and administering Radio & Weasel works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company also instructed UPRS to remove the catalogue from its databases and public listings. Goodlyfe Magic Limited said the royalty payments it received did not reflect the popularity and commercial use of the Radio & Weasel catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company described the payments as inconsistent with the value of the works and said the situation represented a breach of the trust and obligations owed to it as the copyright holder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its termination notice, the company stated: \u201cThis action is taken due to gross mismanagement, lack of transparency, and suspected fraud in the collection and distribution of royalties relating to our works,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company warned that failure by UPRS to address its demands could result in legal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goodlyfe Magic Limited said it could pursue court action over alleged copyright infringement, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud if UPRS continues administering the catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The notice was signed by Douglas Mayanja, popularly known as Weasel, in his capacity as Director of Goodlyfe Magic Limited and on behalf of the Radio & Weasel music catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Copies of the notice were also sent to the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, Uganda National Cultural Centre and the company\u2019s legal representatives, Brex Advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UPRS had not publicly responded to the allegations by the time of publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Radio and Weasel remain among Uganda\u2019s most recognised music acts, having built a strong catalogue during their years as one of the country\u2019s leading duos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pair, made up of Moses Ssekibogo, popularly known as Radio, and Douglas Mayanja, formed the Goodlyfe Crew in the mid-2000s after leaving the Leone Island camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their music combined Afrobeat, dancehall, R&B and reggae influences, creating a sound that gained popularity across Uganda and the wider region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The duo released several successful songs, including \u201cNakudata\u201d, \u201cBread and Butter\u201d, \u201cLwaki Onumya\u201d, \u201cAbility\u201d, \u201cPotential\u201d and \u201cMagnetic\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Radio was known for his songwriting, vocal ability and production skills, while Weasel became recognised for his energetic performances and dancehall influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their partnership ended following Radio\u2019s death on February 1, 2018, but their music catalogue has continued to remain active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dispute between Goodlyfe Magic Limited and UPRS places renewed attention on the issue of music royalties, copyright management and how artists and rights holders earn from their creative works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For many musicians, collective management organisations play an important role in licensing music and collecting payments when songs are used commercially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, disputes over transparency and royalty distribution have remained a concern within creative industries globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Goodlyfe Magic Limited has given UPRS 14 calendar days to provide the requested records, audit report and account statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It remains unconfirmed whether UPRS will comply with the request, respond publicly to the allegations or challenge the termination notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is also not confirmed whether legal proceedings will be filed against the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The total amount of royalties collected from Radio & Weasel\u2019s works and the amount allegedly owed to Goodlyfe Magic Limited have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
