Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene as rescue efforts got underway.

Critically injured students were transported to Mukono General Hospital for treatment.

Uganda Railways spokesperson John Lenon Sengendo confirmed the incident and said one adult died in the crash.

The deceased was identified only as a teacher, and no further details about their identity had been released at the time of reporting.

Uganda Railways said preliminary findings indicate that the bus driver failed to comply with traffic instructions before entering the railway crossing.

According to Sengendo, a police officer positioned about 200 metres from the crossing had signalled the driver to stop.

He said the driver allegedly ignored the instruction and proceeded onto the railway line.

Sengendo also said the train crew repeatedly sounded warning horns as the train approached the crossing.

“The train crew repeatedly sounded the horn as it approached the crossing, but the bus continued onto the railway line.”

Authorities have not released a final investigation report, and the preliminary findings remain part of the ongoing inquiry.

The train later resumed its journey to Kampala after emergency operations at the scene were completed.

The number of injured students reportedly placed significant pressure on emergency responders.

First responder Abdul Ssali said available ambulances were insufficient to transport all the critically injured victims.

“All the critically injured students were rushed to hospital on boda bodas because the available ambulances were not enough.”

The exact number of injured students has not been officially confirmed. Authorities have also not disclosed the severity of injuries sustained by those receiving treatment.

Following the train bus accident in Uganda, residents pointed to what they described as inadequate safety measures at the Namumira railway crossing.

According to residents, the crossing lacks adequate warning signs, automatic barriers and traffic lights.

Some residents also accused DAKS Clearing and Forwarding Company of allowing trucks to park near the railway crossing, saying the parked vehicles obstruct motorists’ visibility. Those claims have not been independently verified.

Eyewitness Joseph Kaweesi said students were singing while loud music played inside the bus as it approached the crossing.

He suggested the driver may not have heard the train’s warning horn because of the noise inside the vehicle.

That account remains an eyewitness observation and has not been confirmed by investigators.

Other eyewitnesses maintained that the train repeatedly sounded its horn before the collision occurred.

Following the Mukono accident, Uganda Railways renewed its appeal for motorists to observe safety regulations at railway crossings.

Sengendo urged drivers, particularly operators of public service vehicles, to obey instructions issued by police officers and railway stewards.

He also said Uganda Railways is implementing a programme to install automated barriers at railway crossings located in densely populated areas.

According to Sengendo, improved infrastructure alone will not prevent accidents without responsible road user behaviour.

The railway agency says both infrastructure improvements and compliance with traffic regulations are necessary to reduce similar incidents in future. Investigations into the Mukono train bus collision are continuing.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash pending completion of investigations. The identity of the deceased teacher has not been released.

It also remains unconfirmed whether any charges will be brought against the bus driver. Officials have yet to disclose the exact number of injured students or provide updates on their medical conditions.

As investigations continue, the fatal collision has once again drawn attention to railway crossing safety, emergency response capacity and the importance of complying with traffic instructions.

For now, Uganda Railways says it will continue rolling out automated barriers at busy crossings while urging motorists to exercise caution whenever approaching railway lines.

The Mukono train bus collision claimed the life of one teacher and left dozens of Mwebaza High School students injured after a passenger train struck a school bus at the Namumira railway crossing in Mukono Municipality on Friday morning.
