Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga Hosts Spice at Bulange Mengo, Hails Tourism and Cultural Impact

The visit of Jamaican dancehall star Spice to Uganda is already creating excitement beyond music, with Buganda Kingdom Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga describing her trip as a major boost for tourism and cultural promotion.

Spice, whose real name is Grace Latoya Hamilton, is in Uganda ahead of her “Let’s Get Spiced Up” concert scheduled for May 9 at Lugogo Cricket Oval.

During her stay, the singer paid a courtesy visit to Bulange Mengo, the headquarters of the Buganda Kingdom, where she met the Katikkiro together with ministers serving under Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

Her visit has attracted attention from both entertainment lovers and tourism officials who believe such international stars can help shine a bigger spotlight on Uganda.

Speaking during the meeting, Katikkiro said Uganda and Jamaica share deep historical and cultural connections because many Jamaicans trace their roots back to Africa.

He explained that despite the distance between the two countries, there are many similarities in culture, appearance, and identity.

According to him, visits from globally recognised personalities like Spice help tell Uganda’s story to the rest of the world.

He added that many people across the globe may become interested in visiting Uganda after seeing famous celebrities experience the country’s culture and heritage.

Mayiga also stressed that tourism is important because it creates jobs, brings income, and supports many businesses.

He encouraged Ugandans to embrace leisure and appreciate the beauty of their own country by participating more in tourism activities.

The concert itself is being organised by the Uganda Tourism Board together with the Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board as part of efforts to market Uganda internationally.

Organisers hope the event will attract both local and international attention while combining entertainment with tourism promotion.

As part of her cultural experience, Spice also toured the famous Kasubi Royal Tombs, one of Buganda’s most respected heritage sites.

The visit highlighted Uganda’s rich history and traditions, with officials saying such experiences are important in showing international visitors what the country has to offer beyond wildlife and scenery.

Tourism stakeholders believe high-profile celebrities can act as unofficial ambassadors who help promote Uganda simply by sharing their experiences with millions of followers around the world.

With excitement building ahead of her concert, many people now see Spice’s visit as more than just a music event.

To some, it is a chance for Uganda to connect its culture, history, and entertainment industry to a global audience.

As preparations continue for the Lugogo show, supporters believe the Jamaican star’s presence could leave a lasting impact on Uganda’s tourism image long after the music stops playing.
