King Oyo Death Confirmed as Tooro Kingdom Begins Royal Succession Process

The King Oyo death has been officially confirmed by the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomii, who announced that the monarch died at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

Rwomii announced the passing of His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Tooro, in a statement issued after earlier reports of his death had circulated on social media.

The Prime Minister described the King’s passing as a major loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening.”

The announcement comes hours after the Tooro Kingdom leadership had confirmed that King Oyo was in critical condition.

Earlier on Thursday, the public had been asked to reject speculation and unverified reports concerning the monarch’s health.

The subsequent announcement has now formally confirmed his death.

The King’s death follows an earlier statement from the Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister confirming that he was in critical condition.

That earlier communication called on the people of Tooro and well-wishers across Uganda and beyond to pray for the monarch.

It also urged the public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information.

The latest announcement did not provide the cause of death or medical details surrounding the circumstances leading to the King’s passing.

The statement therefore offers no confirmation of claims that had circulated online concerning the King’s alleged illness.

The Prime Minister described the loss in terms of its significance to the Kingdom and the country.

“This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda.”

The statement also included the words, “Omukama Atulize. Enkuba Etutire.”

Beyond announcing the King’s death, the Prime Minister’s statement addressed the future of the Tooro monarchy.

Rwomii assured the people of Tooro that the institution of the Crown would continue. “The continuity of the Crown is assured.”

The Prime Minister confirmed that King Oyo leaves behind a Prince who will serve as his heir. However, the identity of that Prince has not yet been publicly revealed.

According to the statement, the identity of the heir will be formally announced at the appropriate time in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.

“His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.”

The announcement introduces a succession dimension to the Tooro Kingdom following the death of its monarch, while leaving the formal identification of the heir for a later announcement.

No details have yet been provided about a succession ceremony or coronation.

As news of the King’s passing spreads, the Prime Minister has called upon the people of Tooro to remain united during the period of mourning.

“I call upon the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this difficult time.”

The appeal comes after social media reports about the King’s alleged death had circulated before the official announcement. The earlier reports were not confirmed at the time.

The latest statement now establishes the official position of the Kingdom while also asking the public to maintain calm and respect for the Royal Family.

For the people of Tooro, the announcement marks the end of King Oyo’s reign and the beginning of a transition that will be guided by the Kingdom’s traditions and customs.

The Tooro Kingdom has said a further official statement will provide additional information concerning the next steps.

That statement is expected to include details about the funeral and mourning arrangements. The date, time and location of the funeral have not yet been announced.

The Kingdom has also not announced the identity of the Prince who will become heir. Details concerning any succession ceremony or coronation remain unavailable.

The Prime Minister said the public would receive further information through an official communication.

“An official statement will follow with further details, including the funeral and mourning arrangements.”

Until those details are released, the Kingdom’s immediate message is focused on mourning, unity and prayer.

The Prime Minister ended the announcement with a final tribute to the late monarch. “May His Majesty the King rest in eternal peace.”

The King Oyo death marks a significant moment for Tooro Kingdom and the wider Ugandan public, with the Kingdom now preparing to mourn its monarch while beginning the process of formally identifying his successor.
