Tooro Kingdom Honours Omusuuga Kamurasi with Shs180m Land Cruiser Ahead of Coronation

Tooro Kingdom has honoured Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi with a brand-new white Toyota Land Cruiser TX valued at Shs180 million, recognising his role in the kingdom’s affairs following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kamba Iguru IV.

The vehicle has already been handed over to Omusuuga Kamurasi as a gift from the people of Tooro.

The gesture comes days before the scheduled September 29 coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new Omukama of Tooro.

The gift follows a fundraising campaign involving Batooro well-wishers in Uganda and the diaspora, with organisers previously appealing for contributions towards a Shs500 million target.

The proposed fundraising package included the purchase of a vehicle and welfare support.

Omusuuga Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki is a son of the late Omukama George Rukidi III and was born in the mid-1940s.

He holds the traditional position of Omujwera Omusuuga, an office associated with responsibilities including convening royal meetings, participating in funeral arrangements and providing guidance on matters concerning the royal family and succession.

The Babiito are the royal clan from which Tooro monarchs are traditionally drawn.

Following the death of King Oyo, Omusuuga Kamurasi became one of the principal figures involved in consultations over the future leadership of the kingdom.

A 21-member Royal Succession Committee associated with the Babiito was constituted after the king’s death.

The committee later met in Fort Portal and selected George Desmond Kamurasi as its proposed successor.

The succession process has remained contested, with some members of the royal family questioning whether the process produced a legitimate successor while other traditional structures backed a different claimant.

Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I subsequently emerged as another central figure in the succession dispute and is scheduled to be crowned on September 29, 2026.

The new Land Cruiser has been presented as a gesture of appreciation for Omusuuga Kamurasi’s service to Tooro and his involvement in the kingdom’s affairs during a difficult period.

The gesture follows a period of mourning and transition after the death of King Oyo.

According to the additional information provided, the people of Tooro gifted the vehicle to Omusuuga Kamurasi for standing firm and protecting the kingdom’s cultural norms during the transition.

The Omusuuga’s role included convening the clan and participating in the succession process as the kingdom moved towards a new reign.

The vehicle therefore comes as a public recognition of his role at a significant point in Tooro’s history.

However, the available information does not establish that the gift was connected to the September 29 coronation.

The Land Cruiser also does not resolve the disagreements that have surrounded the succession process.

The death of King Oyo placed the future leadership of Tooro at the centre of discussions involving members of the royal family and traditional structures.

The Babiito succession committee was part of those consultations and later selected a proposed successor.

The process subsequently faced disagreement, with different members of the royal family and traditional structures advancing different positions.

Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I is now scheduled to be crowned the new Omukama of Tooro on September 29.

The coronation will mark another stage in the kingdom’s transition following the death of King Oyo.

For Omusuuga Kamurasi, the Land Cruiser represents recognition from supporters at the end of a period in which he was involved in the kingdom’s traditional and succession affairs.

The immediate major event on the kingdom’s calendar is the September 29 coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

The handover of the Land Cruiser has already taken place, meaning the gift is now in the possession of Omusuuga Kamurasi.

The wider succession questions, however, have not been resolved by the vehicle or its presentation.

There is no established evidence in the available material linking the fundraising campaign or the Land Cruiser directly to the coronation.

The identities of individual contributors to the fundraising campaign and the total amount raised are also not provided.

For Tooro Kingdom, the Shs180 million Land Cruiser is ultimately a public gesture of appreciation to Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi at a significant moment of royal transition, coming as the kingdom prepares for the September 29 coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
